Important Tidbits: "Pets are fantastic companions when you pick the right one for your lifestyle. Learn more about the type of Dog or Cat you have in mind. They depend on you to teach them about house training. With time and patience they will do most anything to please you!! Most cats can stay indoors with a clean litter box. This is something that must be kept clean on a regular basis..Sometimes teaching a new companion with Kenneling works best for Adopter and Companion.. Look into all your options before choosing.. Always make sure that your companion has some sort of shelter, food and water. If you keep your Companions outside make sure they are able to get shelter via a dog house, garage, porch or a petdoor that allows them to get inside. In bad weather they get scared, too. Spend quality time with your companion, they are like children to most of us,they like to play, learn and be talked to. You would be surprised what they understand and mimick. Toys and proper teaching help pups learn, which keeps them out of trouble. With love and patience your companions will not only be your companion, but your best friend and confidante." |

Animals can bring so much joy. They are there when you need that special companion, listeners not talkers... They bring joy into our lives when you least expect it.. Do you have room in your life for a new companion?? |
"We can learn tricks, play ball,Frisbee, walk with you, swim & do many other things . Some of us love to compete on agility tracks." |

***Summer Health Alert..*** Dogs & Cats can suffer from the same problems that humans do--overheating, dehydration & even sunburn--when the mercury rises. By taking these simple precautions, you can keep your animal companions happy & healthy in the hot weather:
*EXCERCISE YOUR DOG IN THE COOL OF THE EARLY MORNING OR EVENING. Never excercise your pet when it's esp. hot or humid. Take care not to let your dog stand on hot asphalt, as his sensitive paw pads can easily burn.
*DOES YOUR POOCH HAVE A PARTICULARLY HEAVY COAT? Help prevent your pet from overheating by cutting his hair to a one-inch length. Never trim your pet's coat to the skin-- which can rob him of his protection from the sun.
*PROVIDE PLENTY OF SHADE AND COOL,CLEAN WATER. This is for animals kept indoors & out. Bring your cat or dog inside during the hottest part of the day, and let him rest in a cool part of the house.
*NEVER LEAVE YOUR ANIMAL ALONE IN A VEHICLE. Overheating can be fatal. Even with he doors open, a parked automobile can quickly become a FURNACE with temps over 100..

***SPAYING & NEUTERING*** IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR PET * Spaying & neutering helps dogs & cats live longer, healthier lives. * Reduces the chance of abscesses & injuries due to mating, & stress & complications from breeding. * Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine & ovarian cancer & greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer. * Neutering eliminates testicular cancer & decreases the incidence of prostate disease.
IT'S GOOD FOR YOU * Pets are usually better, more affectionate companions. * Male cats are less likely to spray & mark territory. * Most pets are less likely to bite. Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior & temperament problems than those spayed/neutered.
IT'S GOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY * Communities spend millions of dollars to control unwanted animals. * Irresponsible breeding contributes to the problem of dog bites and attacks. * Stray pets & homeless animals get into trash containers; defecate in public areas, or on private lawns. |

***MADDIE'S FUND*** Maddie's Big Fix is closed at this time, but we hope they will be helping Alabama and it's Companions again in the future. If they do we will post it here! Thanks Maddies' Fund for all you did here in AL.

***GUCCI BILL*** "ANIMAL CRUELTY" The "Gucci Bill", named after a dog who was burned & hung from a tree by a group of malicious teenagers, was passed by the Al. legislature last year, making certain acts of animal cruelty a felony offense. The bill was heralded by humane societies & animal prtection advocates across the state as a new vehicle to stop animal cruelty in the state. HOWEVER, THE GUCCI BILL WILL BE MEANINGLESS IF ALABAMA'S LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES REFUSE TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST ANIMAL ABUSERS. Last Dec., a Delmar, Al. man was arrested for torturing & killing his dog after finding her rummaging thru the trash. Witnesses to the terrible crime contend that Will Robinson shot his dog twice before throwing her on a trash pile & setting her on fire. The man then forced his children to watch their beloved pet burn to death while her anquished howls filled the air. The Gucci Bill was written expressly to stop violent criminals like that. Yet,right now, he goes unpunished for this terrible crime because a Grand Jury recently failed to indict him, despite extensive testimony from 7 witnesses. However, under Al. law, the Al. Att. Gen. can still take action on this case by re-submitting the case to another Grand Jury. But so far, he has failed to do so. Calls & letters from concerned citizens could inspire him to reconsider his position.

"Don't let sleeping dogs lie without speaking your mind about animal cruelty and overpopulation, we can talk among ourselves, but talking to the right persons and doing something about it works better.. Please help us do something by contacting your local Pounds/Shelters, city officials, governors, papers and the internet. Please check the Pets all over the U.S. that need a nice and loving home. Please do your part in stopping Puppymills, sometimes breeding dogs are abused for the profit. We have too many that need homes already. Find out what you can do to help!!" |
